Savona is a seaport in the west part of the northern Italian region of Liguria, capital of the Province of Savona, in the Riviera di Ponente on the Mediterranean Sea.
Savona used to be one of the chief seats of the Italian iron industry, having iron-works and foundries, shipbuilding, railway workshops, engineering shops, and a brass foundry.
One of the most celebrated former inhabitants of Savona was the navigator Christopher Columbus, who farmed land in the area while chronicling his journeys. 'Columbus's house', a cottage situated in the Savona hills, lay between vegetable crops and fruit trees. It is one of several residences in Liguria associated with Columbus.

The University of Genoa is one of the most ancient of the European large universities with several educational paths distributed throughout Liguria Region between the headquarters in Genoa and the learning centres of Imperia, Savona and La Spezia, with peaks of excellence in numerous scientific and technological fields. In particular, the Savona University Campus offers teaching and research on issues related to sustainability by offering courses in engineering in the areas of energy and civil protection, sport science and rehabilitation for the promotion of personal well-being, and communication sciences projected into the era of digital technology and sustainable tourism. Within the Campus there are also both companies, mostly related to hi-tech and innovative industrial sectors, and academic research laboratories. This constitutes a unicum at the Ligurian level that represents an undoubted factor of development both for the university structures themselves, which are able to direct their investigative activities toward topics of applicative interest, and for the productive realities present, which can benefit from high scientific consulting services typically not supported by the skills of a traditionally configured corporate technical office. Services are complemented by a cafeteria with attached bar, a modern library/media library, various sports facilities and accommodation for off-site students.
